Mononucleosis is usually caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). The virus will remain surrounded by your blood the rest of your life, but you will not be reinfected as the antibodies to it will also be surrounded by your blood. Regarding contagiousness, most physicians believe that you are no longer contagious after 2-3 weeks of your infection. The level of EBV antibodies surrounded by your blood may indicate how long ago you were infected and the physician will remains his/her recommendation on that. Some population "shed" the virus in their saliva weeks, months, or even years after infection, but this is not adjectives.
